What is STMCGateway?       Download this Article

STMCGateway stands for Safe Telematics Monitoring and Control Gateway.  STMCGateway is Telematics deployment that is: Safe, Assures driver  Intent, Simple, 100% Availability, Accessible, Universal, Portable,  Security  Enabled and Cost Effective.   it is a three tiers approach to safety focused DrivingSystemTM

  1. Assessment

  2. Hands on Wheel Interface

  3. Intelligent Assistant

How is this achieved?

By studying the driving experience in light of Telematics for 8 years, 1985-2003, we concluded that DrivingSystem™ is a system that consists of Man, Machine, Environment, History and Regulation.  This conclusion was inspired by our Quality Management and Line Assembly background that helped us articulate the issues we walked into with our first prototype.  It further helped reinforce the key aspects of the solutions, namely Centralized Controls and Assistance instead of scattered equipments, and the Hands On Wheel Interface with text to speech feed back instead of the Speech Recognition and a screen.

The obviousness of this solution is mostly due to its simplicity, and not due to lack of Novelty.  In designing and  evaluating cars, the automotive engineer had very lacks requirements that until very recently advocated taking eyes off the road for seconds at a time, with emphasis placed mainly on layout (Ergonomic) and not on real time driving.  This lead us to invent our own term, "DynamicErgonomics" to explain the view that things happen as the vehicle is moving through space and time and other factors need to be considered beside "seating", "reach", "NVH" etc.

With the system approach where a computer will monitor all aspect of the driving system and enable the driver to operate a myriad of controls without taking hands off the DrivingSystem™ and disable unnecessary alarms at a poor timing, e.g. our infamous windshield washer experience in '88 where the light on a test vehicle came on each time we changed lanes abruptly.

We now had the firm basis for a solution that is Programmable and Scalable.

How is it Safe:

  1. Safety is provided by the computer ability to process information and take actions faster then human does.

  2. Safety is provided by computer ability to remember complex conditions from previous experiences and to recall them in a timely manner

  3. Safety is provided by the Hands On Wheel Interface, that enables drivers to control a myriad of equipment from the steering wheel using a screen or an audible menu.

  4. Testing of system components and confirming status with multiple data sources assures reliability

  5. Assuring Driver intent is achieved by providing the driver with an HMI that relies on proven technology that can not be intercepted, distorted or duplicated by the environment.

  6. Simplicity is achieved with digit gesture interpretation, namely thumb gesture, Thumbs up means YES, Thumbs down means NO.  Mental workload caused by remembering Voice commands is fully eliminated
